Hello there and welcome to the forums!
Yeah, we all have those days… it's life isn't it? Regarding waking up with smelly breath, this is totally normal actually, it is called "morning breath", and most adults suffer from it after waking up. It is mainly caused by reduced oxygen levels and dehydration during the night, change in saliva composition and sleeping with an open mouth, which can cause extreme dryness in the mouth. Dry mouth encourages bacteria to reproduce big time, hence causing bad breath.
If you cannot afford to see a dentist, the best thing you can do is improve your oral higiene. It takes virtually no money to do it, just a few more minutes taking care of your mouth each day. Flossing is essential, as well as brushing the tongue with a good tongue brush and scraper. Here are the links to some posts you may find useful:

And regarding your eating habits… as long as you clean your mouth properly after eating, this should be enough to minimise any nasty smells. If you do suffer from chronic halitosis though, it is even more important that you take care of your mouth, and in that case, you should also consider finding out what the underlying causes of your bad breath problem are (and perhaps save a bit of money to see a dentist, if you have not seen one in a while).
I hope this helps!
