There are a number of tests you can do to check for the origin of your bad breath.
In general, bad breath that originates from the tonsils (tonsil stones) will be perceived the same way whether you breathe through your mouth or your nose. With this I mean that if you have got your mouth closed, a person in front of you will perceive the same kind of foul smell as if you had your mouth open.
On the other hand, if the problem was mainly located in the nose or sinuses, the smell would be stronger when breathing through the nose. Or if the problem was mainly the gums, the tongue or teeth then the smell would be perceived a lot stronger when you talked or breathed through the mouth.
This is a general rule of thumb, although it can be really helpful sometimes. One thing: you will need somebody else, a friend or family member, say, to help you determine this.
My special tip: do not just breathe out, also yawn and clear your throat… anything that gets your tonsil muscles squeezed. If the smell is very strong when you do that, it is very likely that your tonsils are harbouring some nasty stuff in there.
Here is a post I wrote the other day on tonsil stones and bad breath. I will post more articles on tonsil stones soon!
