Brushing your teeth can be one of the simplest but most effective ways of keeping your oral health up to par. Typically this is part of the normal day to day routine for all of us, but we usually fail to take note of the correct way of brushing, one that can truly help with dental health maintenance. Here are some guidelines to follow so that brushing can be even more effective:
A Toothbrush With a Soft Bristle is Preferred:
First go for a toothbrush that is made of soft nylon bristle, which is the more favored type of brush by medical practitioners. There are various handle designs to opt for but you do not really need the fancy look; instead look for a toothbrush with a good grip.
Use a Small Amount of Toothpaste:
Place only a daub of tooth paste; a pea size is the recommended amount. Any tooth paste will do as long as it contains fluoride. So you do not really need to go for the expensive ones.
The Proper Position for Brushing is 45 Degrees:
The proper position of the brush when tooth brushing is forty five degrees against the gum line. The most effective movement is gentle up and down strokes from the gum line to the edge of the teeth. All back and front surfaces of your teeth need to be brushed this way. This motion ensures the removal of plaque that usually builds up along the gum line as well as inside the gingival sulcus. When it comes to brushing the inner side of your front teeth, both on the upper and lower jaw, the right brushing technique is a flicking toothbrush movement. For the chewing surface of your teeth, you can do a combination of circular as well as back and forth motion for brushing.
Vary the Areas Where You Start Brushing In Your Mouth:
The specific part where brushing should start does not really matter. In fact it is better if you start brushing your teeth in different areas every so often. Because if you tend to always start in the same location, that part gets the most amount of toothpaste and force, which might lead to irritation in the long run.
It is however important to pay particular attention to hard to reach areas, as well as the most commonly neglected area around your teeth, which is the inner surface of your lower and upper molars located right at the back of your mouth. Starting brushing on this area is recommended so that you can devote some time cleaning it. When we start brushing our teeth we tend to feel slightly more excited and keen, and hence we do a better job, so starting at the difficult areas seems like a good idea. Teeth that are easy to access – the front teeth, that is, incisors and canine – can be brushed the last, since not much effort is required to brush these area effectively.
Don’t Forget to Brush Your Tongue as Well:
Apart from the teeth, the oral cavity also contains the tongue and the mouth is bounded by the palate, the inner cheeks and the lips. It is therefore important that you clean these areas too in order to minimize the growth of bacteria that can cause dental plaque as well as caries.
Some tooth brushes come with a tongue cleaner attached at the back, though they are not very effective at removing debris and bacteria located on the tongue surface. A tongue brush and scraper is recommended for tongue cleaning, and you can use use the tooth brush bristles to clean your cheeks.
Cleaning all these areas regularly has been shown to prevent bad breath so it is definitely worth taking that extra time each day.
Flossing Those Hard to Reach Spots:
Hard to reach areas in the mouth such as the gingival sulcus, any existing tooth pockets and interdental spaces can be very difficult to clean using toothbrush alone. It is therefore important to use dental floss to prevent plaque formation, tooth decay, gum disease and any other dental problems.
